I really wonder if I would have enjoyed it more if I hadn't previously read The Devil in the White City. I found that book so compelling that I went into this book with high expectations that were probably hard to live up to.Miss Bibliophilehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09433318219707424076noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6398386242806301174.post-43301368813080072972012-12-29T12:25:29.519-05:002012-12-29T12:25:29.519-05:00I'm reading this a bit late, but I've got ...I'm reading this a bit late, but I've got to agreeably disagree with your take on Beasts and Chaperone. I liked them both. Actually, I couldn't put Beasts down, but I am a bit of a 40s freak. OK. I suppose I did have to push a bit during the drier parts, but Dodd's naivete and Martha's wild ways continued to dismay and startle me. As for Chaperone, I did put it down often, but Cora's discoveries and schemes made it impossible for me to return the book to the library, even when it was long overdue. I also think my interest in the 20s kept me turning the pages. You do have a point, though, about Moriarty's committment to Louise's character. It would have been nice to know more. I feel so bad admitting that because I don't like to be to mean about books, but it bored me and the recipes weren't that amazing.Lulihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00556153894092681132noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6398386242806301174.post-10958413107682179782012-12-18T22:16:17.640-05:002012-12-18T22:16:17.640-05:00I think I would like In Garden of Beasts. Not because it was such a fun time but just because there is so much to learn and such heroic stories of heroic people. You have the best taste in books. It's certainly an interesting perspective to view that era of history from, it just wasn't my personal cup of tea at the time I read it. It's my book groups pick for January discussion. Sorry you were disappointed, but it still sounds interesting to me, being a history buff.<br />(By the way, Noreen, The Count of Monte Christo was one of my favorites a long time ago...Sometimes my old favorites don't seem as good now...But it makes me want to try it again and see.)Ingridhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04196816681905653940noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6398386242806301174.post-50814521436091416062012-12-17T20:58:15.454-05:002012-12-17T20:58:15.454-05:00it's really useful to know what NOT to read! ...it's really useful to know what NOT to read! i'm on page 5 or so of "the count of monte christo" - so all my christmas reading is spent. but i had wondered about the first book. thanks!noreenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14809393394822733834noreply@blogger.com
